Protecting Electronics from EMP

What is EMP you may ask. Electromagnetic pulses are generated by nuclear bombs, solar flares, or EMP generators. You can google this and learn more. This article will mainly deal with affordable, do it yourself, protection for the prepper. We now know that a solar flare was responsible for burning up telegraph wires across Europe and the U.S.
So electromagnetic pulse attack is becoming a concern for many people. NASA tells us that 2013 will be a high in the 11 year cycle of sun activity. The military is now 99% protected but protected consumer products are extremely rare. So how do we guard our electronics against this?
Actually the answer is surprisingly simple. There is much talk about Faraday cages and how to build them and how expensive they are. But there is a simple way to protect your electronics. You will see this in the videos below.
Another thing to remember, not talked about in the videos, if there is such an event is that it may be an attack by enemy forces from within or without. They know people are preparing. Do not take out your electronics right after an attack as there may be successive attacks aimed at those foolish enough to quickly remove their radios from protection. If you have multiple radios you could pull one out after about 12 hours but if not I would wait three days.
ALERT! I strongly suggest adding a grounding system to what is shown in the videos. Notice the cans in the videos are sitting on bare dirt. If you are storing in your house, a closet for example, what you need to do is simply drill a 5/8 inch hole in the floor close to your can and get a grounding rod with clamp from the hardware store along with some copper wire. Bolt the wire firmly to the can and clamp it to the ground rod that you have driven in the ground. This will insure that pulses are directed safely away into the ground. This is how I do it.
